Two couples in Berlin. Some came to Berlin illegally from Vietnam, still young and full of hope. The others could be her parents. You've lived here a long time. Pointed milieu study about Vietnamese immigrants whose lives collide fatefully in search of something like home and happiness. Finely observed social drama that exemplarily shows the marginalized position of the Vietnamese diaspora in Central European society. Here are the boys: In order to reduce her debts, she works as a housekeeper, he sells cigarettes illegally. There's the old ones: The man has worked his way up, is one of the masterminds of the Vietnamese cigarette mafia. However, a chic house and incense sticks cannot hide the fact that the winters in Berlin are long and dark. His wife longs to return to her old home. Lisa Violetta Gass sharpens common clichés about the cigarette dealer and the cigarette mafia boss, about a good wife and a healthy world, about having arrived and restlessness, before breaking them down piece by piece with the dramaturgical help of genre motifs. A razor-sharp commentary on the gradual alienation of two generations of Vietnamese migrants in Germany. TB
This imaginative animation from the Balkans deals in a very philosophical way with the war and the aftermath it left on young people who had to join the army. The textures and colors chosen by the director, together with the special camera choreography and careful sound design, create an exceptional visual style. Rada Šešić
The face and voice of a young Syrian fighter. The left half of his face in deep shadow. To be heard: a narrative, still glowing from the memory of an interrogation to which he was called in as an interrogation specialist. The words and sentences come hesitantly and weightily. The first sentence that he speaks dryly and clearly after he has collected himself smoking, with his head tilted and his eyes closed: "I have killed." The man he shot at the end of the interrogation was innocent, he's convinced. But the ten men who witnessed the interrogation had already convicted the suspect and only wanted to see their findings legitimized. What an ordinary work assignment should have been for the young man becomes within a few long minutes a test of his humanity, and he feels that he has failed. Of God and Dogs" deals with this failure and becomes a great cinematic requiem: unreconciled, masterly, desperate. Ralph Eue
