New York City on an early morning in 1959: A chicken bends around the corner, walks past a bewildered pedestrian, climbs the stairs to an apartment, knocks its beak at the door and, after a short wait, is let in. The same morning walk is repeated in the years 2009 and 2059. The conclusion: Our planet is not well off at all. Duscha Kistler
The black and white animated film leads to the Altvater Mountains of 1989: Alois Nebel is the dispatcher at a small railway station. As a child he saw the trains with the expelled Germans running from here. One of them was the young Dorothe. Never again did people speak of her and her fate, but then a mysterious mute appears in the village. The small station of Bílý Potok in the middle of the rugged Altvater Mountains seems to be at the very end of the world. Together with the trains, however, the whole history of the 20th century passed by here. The slightly melancholic stationmaster Alois Nebel has seen a lot and is hard to carry, so sometimes his senses fog. His nasty colleague Wachek uses this to have him locked up in a mental hospital. Here fog hits the mute who still has an old score to settle. The exciting film based on the comic by Jaroslav Rudiš and Jaromír 99 has cult status in its Czech homeland. The cinema adaptation is technically extremely demanding. The characters wear the facial features of well-known actors and have their lively facial expressions, yet everything seems to be drawn with black ink. This extraordinary contribution to the examination of our history received the European Film Award for Best Animation in 2012. CF

The film takes us into the nightly cold of a big Romanian city. The situation unfolds between a broken-down car, a young woman, rebellious and at the same time in need of help, and her parents. The annoyed dialogues that ignite between this tired trio infernale seem so real that they tie the viewer's throat time and time again. The defective car is only a minor matter; what counts are the small family tips that the three fire at each other with the power of habit. One of those incredibly realistic films that have been coming from Romania for a few years now and seem as if one were just accidentally witnessing an absolutely everyday situation.
Misha and Petya are brothers. Their life is a constant struggle; emotionless and without mercy they beat each other up. The single dad's totally out of his depth. He watches helplessly, looks after his fighting dogs and dares a new love after the death of his wife. As the situation worsens, he makes an unusual decision: A lie should unite the family again. With an impressive visual language, the director tells of the cruelty of childhood and yet leaves a little hope behind. DK
Life in the Hungarian countryside is hard and the customs so rough that one is overcome with lasting fear in the face of this darkly shimmering film. Violence in every form has become the main language of communication here, where everything is lacking. Where poverty and lack of prospects take people's breath away, civilization seems to fade. Only in a few scenes you can hear a laugh and it never promises anything good. Nevertheless, the camera doesn't become a voyeur, but dissects the social neglect with a sobriety that is difficult to bear.
