In 1984 the "1st Leipzig Autumn Salon" took place - a venture and a turning point for Dammbeck. Six painters, sculptors and filmmakers organized an art exhibition past all state institutions. It was the first and last of its kind. This recapture of public space by artistic means called into question the monopoly of power of the rulers and became the initial spark for similar activities of other artists in the art centers of the GDR. A courageous signal towards the SED, which regarded the exhibition as a "counterrevolutionary development". After that, there were only two choices: Backward step or departure. Sven Safarov
In 1934 a group of Prague children learned that the ship "Chelyuskin" was trapped in the North Sea ice. They're on their way to help the castaways. Successful DEFA film adaptation of the book of the same name by Alex Wedding. Recommended from 6 years. In 1934 a group of Prague children learned that the Chelyuskin ship was trapped in the North Sea ice. They decide to help the castaways. Even if they never reach their destination, the young participants of this "expedition" gain a huge amount of life experience. A special level of experience is given to the film by documentary footage of the actual rescue of the Chelyuskin. The film, based on the book of the same name by Alex Wedding, was praised at its premiere in 1984 by the film magazine Filmdienst as a "hymn to tolerance and dreams".
Poetic portrait of Mina Witkojc, 1893-1975, innkeeper's daughter from Burg, day labourer, maid, persecuted National Socialist, fighter for emancipation, editor, poet and one of the most important voices of the Wendish language. The melancholic landscape of the Spreewald and its reflection in the natural metaphors of Mina Witkojc's poetry form the framework of an atmospheric collage of pictures, poems, memories of companions and contemporary witnesses, historical documents and archive material. The collage simultaneously tells of exclusion and discrimination, of the oppression of a minority and the search for one's own identity, of the importance of one's mother tongue and the power of poetry. The story of a strong girl who unmasks many adult actions as highly questionable. She even saves the king from dark forces and becomes his advisor in thanks. Imaginative film based on an art fairy tale by Gisela and Bettina von Arnim. Recommended from 6 years. The imaginative and quirky film is based on the 1840 art fairy tale "The Life of the High Countess Gritta von Rattenzuhausbeiuns" by Gisela and Bettina von Arnim. At the centre of the story is a strong girl who unmasks many adult actions as highly questionable. On top of that, she even saves the king from dark powers and becomes his supreme advisor in thanksgiving. From now on there should only be good laws, so that all people can be good. Whether this works so easily, however, remains a big question. KDF
The high art of animated short stories - Piotr Dumałas Cartoons almost always manage without dialogue and still tell stories: about the wolf in man, about the "black cap", about fairy tale characters from space, about Franz Kafka's life or about Dostoevsky's "guilt and atonement". A poetic impression of two lovers walking. (Catalog Wrocław, 2009)
A ramble through sorbian customs in the Mittellausitz, made in GDR. The classic documentation leads through the course of a year, explaining village architecture, furniture, traditional costumes, handicrafts, legends and oral traditions as well as the most important customs from the Zapust to the Bescherkind. The culture of the Sorbs is understood less as a living world than as folklore and this is presented as an element of the socialist human community. Members of various folklore groups and a variety of their activities are introduced and songs and dances are performed on various occasions. An interesting contemporary document that not only clarifies ideological premises, but also points to a certain persistence of Sorbian culture. In addition, a village world is documented that belongs to the past in this form today: for example the old women in everyday costumes in the street scene. In the end, critical tones are by no means omitted if the danger to the Sorbs from mining is clearly stated. GL
