Witaj heißt: Ic...

1980 /
The Sorbian teacher and folk poet Fryco Rocha (1863-1942) taught the Sorbian language despite the prohibition in the empire and wrote a multitude of poems, stories and songs in it. The director follows in the footsteps of his grandfather to the present day of Sorbian identity in the GDR. In Tauer, where Rocha worked, contemporary witnesses recall how he encouraged and empowered them - who were discriminated against as "Wendish packs" - to develop pride and self-confidence in their own culture. Peter Rocha explores what it means to be Sorbe today (at the end of the 1970s) in conversation with intellectuals and young people. In their reports he assembles dreamlike sequences of remnants of a living Sorbian folk culture such as the Zapust. On a third level, ghostly images of power plant storms and the squeaking of coal wagons on the soundtrack penetrate the narrative - a subtle commentary by the DEFA director on the threat to Sorbian culture in the present. The audience knew how to read these pictures and Peter Rocha proved to be worthy of his resistant ancestor. GL

WOZU DENN ÜBER...
