A story in four songs and a memorial for the victims of Chilean fascism. Even before the film's title, Violeta Parra's indictment "¿Que dirá el Santo Padre?" sounds to images of the noble agreement between church and dictatorship. To and after the titles: three times the murdered singer Víctor Jara (1932-1973) - during a studio recording, as a tribune of the people and as a martyr icon. Ralph Eue
A farewell to a cozy narrow-gauge railway, reminiscent of the idyllic times of Lithuanian independence. Planned as a picture narrative without sound, the filmmaker was instructed to add a voiceover after test screenings. The hero couldn't possibly be a platoon, the critics said. It culminated in the introduction of a "human figure", namely the foreman Povilas. Despite all this, Šablevičius's film remains a shining example of Lithuania's poetic documentary film - thanks to a unique cinematographic and allegorical language that testifies to a deep connection with the past. This is exactly what the architects of the "new life" wanted to prevent as much as possible.
The film documents the living conditions of assembly workers on the natural gas route "Nordlicht", one of the major projects of the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (RGW), in the completion of which many East Germans were involved. Good pay and the hope of a less strictly regulated everyday life lured. What Gerd Wille and his cameraman Lutz Körner find, however, are poor supply and sanitary conditions, a lack of leisure activities and general dissatisfaction. Because the film does not correspond to the official image of the worker, it is refused acceptance and disappears into the archive until 1990. Ilka Brombach
