Angela Davis in...

1972 /
The self-image of international solidarity of the socialist states included supporting not only the national liberation movements in Third World countries but also the communist parties in Western countries in order to promote social progress in the world. They also declared their solidarity with Angela Davis, a prominent US-American civil rights activist and communist. She was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Karl Marx University of Leipzig. The film is a joint work of amateurs from the Leipziger Pionierhaus and the Haus der Deutsch-Sowjetischen Freundschaft with two company film groups. Stefan Gööck

Faßroller

1972 /
A worker rolls a barrel through the factory. He's distracted, the barrel makes itself independent and causes damage. Finally it lands at the factory gate, where the worker catches up with it. Morale on a sign: "Avoid accidents! Use the barrel roller!" Occupational safety agitation as slapstick. Ralf Forster

Before a commission, an engineer must justify himself for professional and private misconduct. It must be due to something if the specifications were not met. Marcel Łoziński and Paweł Kędzierski stage a tribunal in which one is made a scapegoat and the group dynamics take their fateful course. Documentary psychodrama.

Körúti esték

1972 /
The spirit of a dead poet visits the old cafés of Budapest, where he used to meet with his artist friends around the turn of the century. True to his "Anima vérité" method, Kovásznai combines drawings and sketches of actual Budapest café houses with fragments of dialogue, fragments of typical bar music and café house noises cut in between. Anna Ida Orosz

Martha Lehmann

1972 /
7 JULY 1952 / POST 46, DIVE / SOME DAYS OF VERY HOT WEATHER / Raspberries, Strawberries, A PRACHT! / Of the 12 chicks there are 7 cocks / Hopefully there won't be a 3rd war. Martha Lehmann wrote down on tiny slips of paper, on the backs of tickets or lottery tickets in a gatekeeper's cottage near Leipzig what moved her. Voigt reconstructs an exemplary biography from found objects - his variant of Brecht's "unworthy old woman". Grit Lemke

Only one of them dares to rebel against injustice and is thrown into prison for it. But in his misery, he meets friends with extraordinary talents. Together with them, the soldier finally manages to outwit the greedy king. The film entertains the youngest viewers in the best way. But it can also be understood - with a view to the adult audience - as a social satire that has hardly lost anything of its former topicality. KDF

Struga - Bilder...

1972 /
Ruins of houses in a ghost village. An excavator that eats its way into the countryside. Trees are felled. A sorbian prayer in a small village church. A singing club rehearses a sorbian song. Laughing workers at the power plant. And surreal images of an alienated Zapust procession moving dreamily through the forest. A Lusatian film poem. The diploma film Konrad Herrmann's was commissioned by Domowina for her 60th anniversary and is based on the poetry cycle of the same name by the Sorbian poet, Herrmann's friend Kito Lorenc. After causing a sensation at the Dokwoche in Leipzig, he ran internationally successfully, but was hardly and controversially accepted in the GDR. Never before in a film had Sorbian mythology been so alienated and placed in the context of the destruction of a habitat. A work of timeless poetry and validity. GL

Zum Achtenmal

1972 /
Workers in the Espenhain open-cast lignite mine listen to a Vivaldi concert in the company's cultural centre after the shift closes. The sounds of the individual instruments blend into the images of the arrival in the dressing rooms, the work on the excavator, on the conveyor belt or on the tracks until a violin appears on the conveyor belt and the concert begins. Art as work, work as art and how they merge, far beyond the well-meaning programmes of the Bitterfelder Weg. - Grit Lemke
